WEBINAR: Safety Roundtable | Preventing Seller Impersonation in Real Estate
Location:

We want you to stay safe on the job year-round. Join our panel in a discussion on safety practices and suggestions in a more open, less formal format.

Real estate transactions have been a prime target of cybercrime over the past decade. There is little sign of this slowing even as the housing market continues to slow. Instead, fraudsters continue to evolve their scam and money laundering tactics to avoid detection. This latest trend involves vacant lots or unencumbered properties. Fraudsters impersonate property owners to illegally sell commercial or residential property. Sophisticated fraudsters use the real property owner’s Social Security and driver’s license numbers in the transaction, as well as legitimate notary credentials, which may be applied without the notary’s knowledge.

This is happening all around the country and south Florida is not immune. Just this past March, Marty Kiar, the Broward County Property Appraiser and Sheriff Gregory Tony, the Sheriff of Broward County, completed a comprehensive investigation into a real estate property theft criminal enterprise, involving over 12 million dollars of property in Broward County, and concluded with 3 ring leaders in custody with more to follow.

In this roundtable, hear from Marty Kiar, the Broward County Property Appraiser and lead investigators who will give you an overview on this ongoing investigation. Also, hear from Ailin Perez, Doma Title, with insight on how seller impersonation fraud is affecting our industry and how you can take precautions from the beginning!
